The first few years of my teaching career, I would leave my classroom every day so frustrated. I knew that how I was teaching reading was not working for all of my students. But I didn’t know why.

Every parent-teacher conference, I would chat with the parents of the struggling readers in my class and tell them the same things: “They will eventually catch on, you don’t need to worry too much.” “Make sure you’re reading at home with them every night.” I would meet individually and in small groups with my struggling readers every.day. Yet we weren’t seeing results.

Fast forward a few years later, I learned about the science of reading. I realized I was teaching reading ALL WRONG. And that most schools are still using these outdated and ineffective teaching practices to try and teach kids to read.

It wasn’t long after discovering the science of reading that I started seeing AMAZING results from kids I was teaching and tutoring. One of my students was two grade levels behind in reading when I first started working with him. Fast forward less than a year later, and he was at the top of his class in reading (and everything else!).

I realized that most parents don’t have the correct information when it comes to helping their struggling reader. They are told to read more, worry less. But I’m here to tell you that doesn’t work.
